A Bit of Botany

a little botanical information on orange

description
Oranges are small trees of the Rutaceae family that bear white flowers, the trees are about 10 m (32.8 ft) tall with wavy-edged, oval leaves that are 4–10 cm (1.5 - 3.9 in) long.

Orange leaves have many glands containing aromatic oils, these appear as dots on the leaves to the naked eye. Orange flowers grow alone or in clusters of up to six, are white in color and extremely fragrant. Orange fruit are round, and may vary in size and somewhat in color. The fruit color can depend on temperature of the growing area—in some areas that are very warm all year round, fruits will appear to be green or blotchy. The fruit is called a hesperidium (defined as a fruit with sectioned pulp inside its separable rind) and always contains eleven segments, the seeds (if present) are hard and white.

common names & nomenclature
The English word orange comes from the Arabic, which comes from the Tamil word orang meaning six and five (referring to the eleven segments found in the fruit).

Also known as:
Sweet orange, blood orange, navel orange, Valencia orange, orange

Cultivation & Harvesting

considerations for growing and harvesting orange

climate
Orange trees flourish in subtropical, near-tropical climates, yet they can stand several degrees of frost if not for very long. Generally they can tolerate undesirable conditions, but cannot grow in the shade.

soil
This plant does best in a moist heavy loam soil enriched with compost. It does not like to be waterlogged, soil must be well-draining.

growing
Sow the orange seeds that have been taken from a ripe fruit (rinse thoroughly), keep in a greenhouse. Germination usually takes 2-3 weeks, be careful not to overwater and keep well ventilated. One seed may produce 1-2 seedlings. When large enough, transplant the seedling into a larger pot and grow on in the greenhouse for 3 seasons before growing outside. Plant them outside in Summer and give winter protection for the first few seasons outside. Can also be propagated by cuttings or layering.

harvesting
Harvest the orange peel when the fruit is ripe, dry the peel in smaller cut pieces, can also be ground into powder.

preserving
Store dried orange peel and powdered orange peel in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
