Pleurisy, more commonly known as Butterfly Weed, is a North American species of milkweed readily recognized by its bright orange flower buds, which open in fall and provide food for Monarch butterflies. Fiber from the plant, including the roots, were used by Native Americans to make rope.

Pleurisy root is harvested in spring and used to make extracts and tinctures. However, due to the presence of cardiac glycosides, the herb should not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, or by anyone with a history of heart disease or taking stimulant medications.

Pleurisy, also known as Orange Swallow-wort, Silkweed and Butterfly Weed, is a milkweed distributed throughout eastern North America. It is unique from other milkweeds in that the plant exudes little milky juice when cut.

The aerial parts of this herb are edible and may be cooked as vegetables or served with salad greens The bark and the silk from mature seed pods are used to make cloth and to produce fiber fill for life jackets. Pleurisy root also has a long history of use and is typically prepared as tea or infused in hot water and applied as a warm poultice.
