Damiana is a member of the passion flower family and is native to the Gulf of Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and South Africa.

In Mexico, where the herb is known as Mexican holly, damiana is a key component of an alcoholic beverage that is considered to be the country’s traditional liquor. The shape of the bottle it is distributed in is designed to represent an Incan Goddess, and the brew is touted as the original used in the first margarita ever made. Damiana was also an ingredient in the original Coca Cola formula.
