Echinacea purpurea is a flowering plant in the sunflower family characterized by large daisy-like flower heads that feature a spiny seed cone at the center surrounded by a halo of long, lavender petals. Echinacea purpurea powder has a long history of use in North America and Europe and is still one of the most popular ingredients in over-the-counter supplements formulated to support the immune and lymphatic systems in humans and animals.
While the entire plant contains several flavonoid antioxidants, they appear to be more abundant in the flowering tops. The powdered tops of Echinacea purpurea are used in foods and beverages, supplements, cosmetics and in veterinary medicine.
