[ Recipe: Cayenne Balm ] ~ from Monterey Bay Herb Co

cayenne balm

NOTE: This is not a food recipe! Use this balm as you would any over-the-counter capsaicin cream, massaging it over sore muscles, achy joints, etc. Additional cautions: Do not allow balm to come into contact with eyes, nose or mouth. Use surgical gloves when using, or wash hands immediately after application. Not for use on children or pets.

½ cup grapeseed, sweet almond or olive oil
4 teaspoons cayenne
½ ounce of grated beeswax

Place the oil and cayenne in the top of a double boiler, stirring to combine. Carefully heat the oil for a minute or two while stirring. Remove from heat for a moment, then return to the burner. Repeat this process at least 3 times before moving the pan to a trivet to cool. Cover the pan and let the oil mixture rest for several hours or overnight. Now strain the oil mixture through filter paper or cheesecloth, reserving the infused oil. Using the double boiler again, gently heat the beeswax until melted. Add the infused oil and stir until wax and oil are combined. Immediately pour (a funnel is very handy here) into clean jars or tins. Allow to cool completely for several hours or overnight. Place the covers on the tins or jars and label. Store in a cool cabinet for up to 6 months.
