Papaya, also known as Pawpaw and Custard Apple, is a small tree native to Mexico and South America that is now cultivated throughout tropical regions throughout the world for its fruit. While the fruit is known for its delicious flavor and as a source of papain enzyme, the leaf is valued for calcium, beta-carotene and fatty acids.

Papaya leaf is usually used to make teas and infusions, but may also be encapsulated.

Papaya, also known as pawpaw and papaw, is a small tree native to southern Mexico, Central America and northern South America. The plant is also an important export crop grown in many other tropical regions, including the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia and Tanzania. In the US, C. papaya is cultivated in the states of Florida and Hawaii.

The fruit and leaf of this plant are abundant in papain, a protease enzyme break down proteins. Owing to this activity, papaya leaf is taken before meals as a dietary supplement to enhance digestion.


Background: Papaya has been used since ancient times by Mayan. Papaya leaf in particular has the practical use of tenderizing meat for those living in Latin America.

Description: The papaya tree grows native to the tropical areas of the Americas. However, it not grows in many tropical regions. It grows as tall as 25 feet and has yellow flowers and very large fruit. The leaves can be gathered year round.
